Prednisone for Dogs - What You Need to Know
Treating Your Dog's Pain...
Pets, just like their people, can be diagnosed with severe and even deadly diseases. It’s sad and painful to see, but sometimes unavoidable. Of course, modern medicine has been able aid, and even cure some very painful diseases. But not all animal aches and medicines are the same. When looking to settle and even eliminate joint pains in cats and dogs, there’s an all-natural, easy-to-digest supplement on the market that focuses on fixing a particular, widespread issue.
Before we discuss that option, let’s look at an oft-used, sometimes over-prescribed pharmaceutical drug that veterinarians tend to push on pets and may not be necessary.
What Is Prednisone?
The drug is prednisone, a steroid suitable for both pets and humans. In animals, however, it’s mostly used to treat Addison’s disease to help create the glucocorticoids the pet’s body isn’t creating on its own. What’s more, prednisone is an immune system suppressor, which can lead to a variety of other issues. Dosages for prednisone are usually anywhere between 0.5 and 0.18 milligrams per pound. Overdosing on this drug could lead to medical emergencies, such as seizures, loss of hearing, anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure.
Quick Facts:
Typically Used For:
Arthritis, Inflamation, Addison's Disease
Recommended Dosage:
Typical dosage is about 0.1mg/lb
Potential Side Effects:
Diabetes, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Aggression, Altered Behavior, among others.
How it works:
Prednisone is a corticosteroid, which is meant to resemble a naturally occuring horomone, and blocks the production of substances that trigger inflammatory and immune responses.
Can I Use Something Safer?
So how do we treat our dogs’ pain without giving them more issues? Let’s take a look at FlexPet, an all-natural joint pain relief supplement that can be used for both cats and dogs. The chewable tablets are designed to nourish the joints, support stronger cartilage, stimulate the lubricating fluid in the joints, and increase mobility as well as reduce pain and inflammation.
Here’s where FlexPet separates itself from the pack: it is an all-natural supplement, so there are no side effects - which means no sedation or stomach aches for your healing pet; and we are so confident in results, FlexPet comes with a 90-day money back guarantee.
There’s also no prescription needed for FlexPet, unlike Tramadol, which is a Prescription IV drug. While used to ease some arthritis issues, Tramadol is often prescribed to treat anxiety, canine degenerative myelopathy, and coughing, showing the drug’s use as a general treatment medication, unlike FlexPet, which is used to aim directly at the inflammation and arthritis issues found in pets.
Prescribed drugs and medications typically have a 20% effectiveness rate and only serve to cover up pain, while FlexPet is 80% effective and gets to the root of the problem. That’s thanks to FlexPet’s patented ingredient, CM8, also known as cetyl myristoleate, which is natural and lubricates and reduces swelling in the joints.
Quite simply, FlexPet means no more prescriptions, no more side effects, and no more pet pain.

What dosage would you give a 90lb and a 105 shepherd for arthritis? The shepherds are 10.5 years old. I have tree walker who is currently on prednisone for inflammation for a cough. Will this hurt or help? He is 29 lbs about 12 years old. He is a rescue so that is why age is approximate.
For a 90lb dog, we typically recommend 4 tablets a day, and starting with 5 tablets per day for 2 weeks to boost the supplement in his system (basically, to “load up”). You can give this to your dog along with prednisone. It’s an all-natural supplement and will not interfere with the medication. However, we typically find that customers are able to wean their dogs off of medications like prednisone or tramadol after a few weeks to a month of being on Flexpet. I may not necessarily help a cough (depending on cause), but it will help with inflammation and pain.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions!
If cough and arthritis, I recommend Temparil P. Once cough is under control, then discontinue Temparil P from 2 x day, to 1 x d every other day, for 3 dosages to 1xd every 3rd day for 3 dosages then discontinue. May want to check with Vet before going on Flexpet.
Howdy Ronnie Here My 4year old toy poodle Lacey will be 5 In a few days been giving her half pill of flex pet Twice a day she has been doing great up till this winter The cold weather has settled in and she is hurting worse then ever so I’m giving her quarter of a 25 Mg. Rimadyl twice day She is worse in morning like her owner I have RA myself Question will the flex pet cause stomache pain after being on it for 4years and now weighing 7 1/2 pounds should I increase the flex pet to whole pill twice day or leave it like it’s been only been taking Rimadyl for about a week but like to get her off it if you think increase flexpet will help but not hurt
Hi Ronnie! First of all, no, your dog will not develop stomach problems from Flexpet. You’re fine to give it to her long term without negative side effects.
As far as the dosage, a full pill should be fine. If your dog is seeing increased pain, you should be fine to increase the dosage and see how she does. After the cold weather leaves us, you can try reducing the dosage again and see how she does.
Hope that helps!
Hi , I was looking up side of effect that may come with prednisolone .came across your flexpet. I have a 8month old 112 pd great Dane pup who has developed hods . Which is inflammation in the joints and grow plates .very painful . My question is , would flexpet be beneficial to him through out his whole live . ? Like a preventative maintenance ? Thanks Tracy.
Hi Tracy. Yes, this would be especially helpful right now for him. Over time, what a lot of our customers do is reduce the dosage as a preventative maintenance, usually about a half dosage per day. Then, later in life if conditions start to emerge and you see symptoms of pain, then you can bump him up to the recommended dosage.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help!
Our 70 pound lab has lymphoma and on prednisone – Would the flexpet be ok to take with the prenisone in this case?
