Rimadyl/Novox (Carprofen) For Dogs
Novox/Rimadyl (Carprofen) For Dogs - What You Need to Know
Treating Your Pet's Pain...
We never like to see our pets suffering in pain. As our dogs get older they deal with many of the same debilitating health conditions that affect humans. These ailments limit our pets activities and can shorten their life span. Pharmaceutical companies come out with different pain relievers to treat or temporarily relieve the pain from these ailments. Novox/Rimadyl (Carprofen generic) is one of the most commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for dogs with arthritis, and is often prescribed for pain associated with post-operative recovery. One in five dogs suffer from Osteoarthritis (OA), making Carprofen an often prescribed medication to mask pain in canines. We would like to examine some important information regarding this drug as well as other natural options that are also available. If you are concerned with NSAID side effects and prefer to treat pain with an effective natural option, we explore those options as well. We always suggest consulting with your veterinarian when it comes to decisions for your pet. What Is Novox/Rimadyl (Carprofen)?
There are a number of veterinary prescribed NSAIDs on the market for treating joint pain, inflammation and OA in pets. Carprofen is the generic name of this NSAID and is marketed under many different brand names but most commonly Novox and Rimadyl. It is commonly prescribed to dogs for pain relief associated with osteoarthritis and postoperative pain. Carprofen is designed to work by inhibiting COX pain signals in an effort to reduce inflammation.
The body’s natural response to injury is to inflame the area in an effort to relieve pain. When cells are damaged the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) is activated. This enzyme stimulates cells to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins in turn contribute to inflammation triggers for example, pain, swelling or fever. Carprofen is designed to block COX-1 and COX-2. Cyclooxygenase enzymes also have positive roles in bodily functions. They protect the stomach lining and help maintain proper kidney functions.
What Are the Side Effects?
What is concerning about Carprofen are its side effects. NSAIDs like Carprofen interfere with the positive functions of prostaglandins. Therefore, taking NSAIDs can have serious side effects. The most common side effects in dogs taking Carprofen are: -Loss of appetite -Vomiting -Diarrhea -Increase in thirst -Increase in urination -Fatigue and/or lethargy -Loss of coordination -Seizures -Liver dysfunction: jaundice (yellowing of eyes) -Blood or dark tar-like material in urine or stools -Staggering, stumbling, weakness or partial paralysis, full paralysis Combining Carprofen with other prescription drug NSAIDs like Galliprant or meloxicam or steroids such as prednisone increase the risk of these side effects. OA is a chronic condition that does not have a cure, therefore your dog may be prescribed an NSAID for an extended period. It is recommended that if you are considering to go this route the lowest dose that controls pain should be taken in an effort to limit these harmful side effects.Quick Facts:
Typically Used For: Pain and Inflammation, Osteoarthritis, Postoperative pain Recommended Dosage: 2mg dosage per lb body weight (4mg/kg). Potential Side Effects: Vomiting -Diarrhea -Decrease in appetite -Soft stool with mucus -Watery or bloody stool -among others. How it works: Carprofen is an NSAID, which is a class of drug for treating pain and inflammation. This NSAID works by preventing an enzyme called Prostaglandins and COX enzymes from effectively doing it's job (more info) Can I Use Something Safer?
So you may be asking - how do we treat pet pain without giving them more issues? Finding an effective natural alternative pain reliever is hard, and that’s why we created Flexpet. An all-natural joint pain relief supplement for pets that can be used for both dogs and cats. The chewable tablets are designed to nourish the joints, support stronger cartilage, stimulate the lubricating fluid in the joints, and increase mobility as well as reduce pain and inflammation.
How does Flexpet separate itself from other pet pain relievers? It is an all-natural supplement and has no side effects. This means no sedation or stomach aches for your healing pet. FlexPet’s patented ingredient CM8, also known as cetyl myristoleate, is a natural anti-inflammatory that lubricates and reduces swelling in the joints. Flexpet also contains:
GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE POTASSIUM: A naturally occurring chemical found in mammals that reduces stiffness, joint swelling and osteoarthritis related pain. Glucosamine plays a key role in cartilage construction and the incorporation of sulfur into cartilage.
MSM (METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE): MSM is a sulfur compound that occurs naturally in plants and animals. Sulfur is needed by the body to form connective tissue. The MSM in Flexpet products has been specially formulated to increase the absorption rate of sulfur.
HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN TYPE II: This is an ingredient found in cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions the joints. Collagen is made of amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and it is used in an effort to protect and rebuild joint cartilage.
BROMELAIN: An enzyme found naturally in pineapple is used to reduce swelling especially after surgery or injury. It has also been shown to reduce sinus inflammation.
ENZYME BLEND: Digestion is dependent on enzymes produced naturally by the body. Larger molecules like Cetyl Myristoleate require more effort for the body to digest and absorb. Our natural enzyme blend is a complex proteinaceous substance used to induce and accelerate reactions necessary for metabolism.
We are so confident in positive results, Flexpet comes with a 90-day money back guarantee. If you are unsatisfied simply return the empty bottles, and we’ll give you a refund of the purchase price – no hassles, no headaches.
