Rimadyl/Novox (Carprofen) For Dogs
As our dogs get older, many deal with the same kinds of joint conditions that affect people, including osteoarthritis (OA). To help manage the pain associated with these conditions, veterinarians often prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Novox/Rimadyl (carprofen) is one of the most commonly prescribed NSAIDs for dogs with arthritis, and is also frequently used for post-operative pain. Below is some general information about this drug, its potential side effects, and a daily joint-support option you can discuss with your vet. We always recommend consulting your veterinarian when making decisions about your pet's care.
What Is Novox/Rimadyl (Carprofen)?

There are a number of veterinary-prescribed NSAIDs on the market for managing joint pain, inflammation, and OA in pets. Carprofen is the generic name of this NSAID and is marketed under several brand names, most commonly Novox and Rimadyl. It is commonly prescribed for pain associated with osteoarthritis and for postoperative pain, and works by inhibiting COX pain signals to reduce inflammation.
The body's natural response to injury is to inflame the area. When cells are damaged, the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) is activated, which stimulates cells to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins in turn contribute to inflammation — pain, swelling, or fever. Carprofen is designed to block COX-1 and COX-2. These cyclooxygenase enzymes also have positive roles in the body: they help protect the stomach lining and help maintain proper kidney function.
What Are the Side Effects?
Because NSAIDs like carprofen also interfere with the positive functions of prostaglandins, they can have serious side effects. The most common side effects in dogs taking carprofen include:
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Increase in thirst
- Increase in urination
- Fatigue and/or lethargy
- Loss of coordination
- Seizures
- Liver dysfunction: jaundice (yellowing of the eyes)
- Blood or dark, tar-like material in urine or stools
- Staggering, stumbling, weakness, or partial to full paralysis
Combining carprofen with other prescription NSAIDs like Galliprant or meloxicam, or with steroids such as prednisone, increases the risk of these side effects. OA is a chronic condition with no cure, so a dog may be prescribed an NSAID for an extended period. If you go this route, it is generally recommended to use the lowest dose that controls pain in order to limit harmful side effects. Always follow your veterinarian's guidance.

A Daily Joint-Support Option
If you're looking for a daily supplement to help support your dog's joint health alongside your veterinarian's guidance, Flexpet is an all-natural option for dogs and cats. It's formulated to nourish the joints, support healthy cartilage, support the joint's natural lubricating fluid, and support a healthy inflammatory response. Flexpet is a supplement, not a medication — it isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and it isn't a substitute for veterinary care. Flexpet contains:
- CM8® (Cetyl Myristoleate) — a naturally occurring fatty acid studied for its role in supporting joint comfort and a healthy inflammatory response.
- Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium — a naturally occurring compound that plays a key role in cartilage construction and the incorporation of sulfur into cartilage.
- MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) — a naturally occurring sulfur compound; sulfur is needed by the body to form connective tissue.
- Hydrolyzed Collagen Type II — a building block of the cartilage that cushions the joints, providing tissue-oriented nutritional support.
- Bromelain — a plant enzyme found in pineapple that supports a healthy inflammatory response.
- Enzyme Blend — helps the body absorb larger molecules like CM8® so your pet gets the most from each serving.
