Galliprant For Dogs

Galliprant For Dogs

No one likes to see their pet in pain. About one in five dogs is affected by osteoarthritis (OA), and as our dogs age they can develop many of the same joint conditions that affect people. To help manage the associated pain, veterinarians may prescribe a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Galliprant is one of the more recently FDA-approved NSAIDs for dogs with arthritis. Below is some general information about it, its potential side effects, and a daily joint-support option you can discuss with your vet. We always recommend consulting your veterinarian when making decisions about your pet's care.

What Is Galliprant?

Galliprant for dogs

Galliprant (grapiprant tablets) has been available since March 2016 and is designed to work at a different point on the inflammatory pathway than older NSAIDs. The body's natural response to injury is to inflame the area. When cells are damaged, the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) is activated, which stimulates cells to produce prostaglandins; prostaglandins in turn contribute to inflammation — pain, swelling, or fever. Galliprant is designed to block prostaglandins, while many other NSAIDs focus on blocking COX. Prostaglandins also have positive roles in the body, helping protect the stomach lining and maintain proper kidney function.

What Are the Side Effects?

Because NSAIDs like Galliprant also interfere with the positive functions of prostaglandins, they can have side effects. The most common side effects in dogs taking Galliprant include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Soft stool with mucus
  • Watery or bloody stool

Combining Galliprant with other prescription NSAIDs like carprofen or meloxicam, or with steroids such as prednisone, increases the risk of these side effects. OA is a chronic condition with no cure, so a dog may be prescribed an NSAID for an extended period. If you go this route, it is generally recommended to use the lowest dose that controls pain in order to limit side effects. Always follow your veterinarian's guidance.

A Daily Joint-Support Option

If you're looking for a daily supplement to help support your dog's joint health alongside your veterinarian's guidance, Flexpet is an all-natural option for dogs and cats. It's formulated to nourish the joints, support healthy cartilage, support the joint's natural lubricating fluid, and support a healthy inflammatory response. Flexpet is a supplement, not a medication — it isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and it isn't a substitute for veterinary care. Flexpet contains:

  • CM8® (Cetyl Myristoleate) — a naturally occurring fatty acid studied for its role in supporting joint comfort and a healthy inflammatory response.
  • Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium — a naturally occurring compound that plays a key role in cartilage construction and the incorporation of sulfur into cartilage.
  • MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) — a naturally occurring sulfur compound; sulfur is needed by the body to form connective tissue.
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen Type II — a building block of the cartilage that cushions the joints, providing tissue-oriented nutritional support.
  • Bromelain — a plant enzyme found in pineapple that supports a healthy inflammatory response.
  • Enzyme Blend — helps the body absorb larger molecules like CM8® so your pet gets the most from each serving.
