Flea and tick season is about to be in full swing, and this year is predicted to be especially bad. While prescription and drug flea and tick prevention medications can be very effective, they are expensive and carry the risk of adverse health effects. Fortunately, there are a few natural ways to keep ‘Fido’ from scratching all day long!
Bathing your pet to keep fleas and ticks off
Fleas cannot grasp onto hair, so when your pet is submerged in water they usually fall off. A citrus-based shampoo is also good for repelling fleas and ticks. Bathing your pet at least once a week is a good way to prevent an infestation.
Essential Oils for your dog
Rose geranium oil can be applied to your dogs collar to help prevent fleas and ticks. Do not used essential oils on or near your cats as they can have a negative reaction.
Keep your home clean
A clean home is far less likely to house bugs and pests than a dirty, unkempt one. Carpet makes a great home for flea eggs and should be disinfected and vacuumed regularly. Make sure you wash your pet’s bed or blankets every couple days in case pests have been brought into the home.
Modify your pet’s diet
Adding garlic and citrus products to your pet’s food can help to naturally repel pests. The components are released through the skin in small quantities and help to ward off fleas and ticks. Be cautious as to what you use though, as garlic and onions are toxic for felines. It is best to consult your veterinarian first.
Try these natural methods for preventing fleas and ticks this season to help keep your pet happy and healthy.
