Joint Pain in Small Dogs

Joint Pain in Small Dogs – What You Need to Know!

Many people associate big dogs with bad joints. While it’s true that many large breeds do have joint problems because of their size, there are lots of smaller dogs that suffer from joint issues too. This includes breeds like Dachshunds, Pugs, Basset Hounds, Chihuahuas, and Terriers. There are a lot of factors that cause joint pain in breeds like this, often due to the breed’s unique biology. For example:

  • Dachshunds, with long bodies and short legs, have spines that are put under a lot of pressure when going up and down stairs, or jumping up to furniture.
  • Pugs can be much more prone to hip dysplasia than other dogs, with 62% of pugs having the condition (source).
  • Basset Hounds, according to PetMD, are prone to major conditions like elbow dysplasia and patellar luxation.
  • Degenerative arthritis affects as many as 20% of Chihuahuas, with another 10% suffering from patellar luxation.
  • Terriers are among small breeds that also suffer from patellar luxation, as well as cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

If you have a smaller dog that has joint issues, what is the best course of action? Of course, you should take your dog to a vet for any injury or medical concern. It’s also important to make sure your dog gets the right amount of exercise and proper diet. But, there are also big “do’s and don’ts” for giving your dogs medications and supplements for pain.

Joint Pain Medication for Small Dogs

Typically, medications refer to products that are prescribed by a vet such as Tramadol and Prednisone, though some products like aspirin would fall into this category as well (For extensive information on Aspirin for dogs, including dosage and concerns, please see Aspirin for Dogs – Is it Safe?). Before giving any of these medications to your dog, please read up on them and the safety risks.

Unfortunately, the way that medications for pain typically work is that they basically cover up pain and symptoms as opposed to treating the root of the problem.  For example, Ibuprofen works by “blocking the production of prostaglandins, substances that the body releases in response to illness and injury.  Prostaglandins cause pain and swelling, or inflammation” (source). In other words, they block natural reactions to stop you from feeling pain. They also are typically only about 20% effective in dealing with pain.

Here is a video from Dr. David Randall from Naples, Florida, one of the state’s top veterinarians, giving a detailed response to a question regarding medications used to treat pain in dogs:

Natural Remedies for Joint Pain in Small Dogs

Many people are looking for natural remedies for joint issues more and more. Not only do medications often have harmful side effects, but people just don’t like giving foreign substances to their best friends. We get it.

The biggest difference with supplements compared to medication is that they are typically all-natural. The FDA views them like food and are treated as products being taken to supplement the diet. Typically, this means that there are no side effects and that there are no interactions with existing medications. Supplements cannot legally make claims to treat or cure specific diseases. However, they do help the body and are most often used by individuals/pets to provide additional assistance while suffering from specific conditions. For example, our product, Flexpet, is not an arthritis medication (learn more about Flexpet here.). However, it does work to lubricate the joints, provide pain relief, and reduce inflammation naturally. As such, many of our customers who have dogs with conditions like dysplasia, arthritis, ccl injuries, and more have reported that after using Flexpet, their dog seems to have had a significant reduction in pain and moved around much more. (See the clip below from Paws in Motion where a kennel manager talks about his experience with Flexpet)
